Girl Scouts Collect More Than 8,800 Pencils For Students

Last updated on Friday, May 11, 2012

(LINTON) - Members of Daisy Troop 2544 recently conducted a pencil drive at Linton-Stockton Elementary School to help students in Henryville and Haiti.

The Greene County Daily World reports, Brandee McKee, Troop 2544 leader, said 8,897 pencils were collected between April 9 and 13. D'Lee Sipes' class collected the most pencils - 1,595. They were treated to a pizza party and a certificate by the troop.

"The project is a service project to help the less fortunate obtain pencils for school. Several children in other countries and right here in the U.S. are unable to afford school supplies and in several countries a child's pencil is his most prize possession," McKee explained. "We came up with the idea while searching online for service project ideas and came across this one. ... After searching online we had a few options as leaders for our first grade daisy troop to choose from and they chose this service project, they were all so excited to be able to help other children."

McKee said her troop decided to take the project to the next level by getting the school involved.

"With the help of the Linton-Stockton Elementary School and other Greene County Girl Scout troops, Daisy Troop 2544 was able to collect 8,897 pencils," McKee said.
Half of the pencils will be delivered to Henryville at the beginning of next school year, while the other half will be shipped to Haiti.

To help offset the cost of shipping the pencils to Haiti, the troop will have a lemonade stand from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 19 at Casey's in Linton.

Troop members include Abby McKee, Amelya Lockhart, AlacZandra Jerrell, Olivia Jerrell, Karly Smock, and Kylie Cooksey. Channon Lockhart serves as co-troop leader.
