(PAOLI) - Former Bedford Police office 46-year-old Stephen Kidd, was arrested after he allegedly stole $200 from a vehicle that was parked at Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital.

Kidd was a security guard for the hospital and also sought the GOP nomination for Lawrence County coroner.

He was taken to the Orange County jail on charges of theft, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.

According to a probable cause affidavit Kidd was found in a van at 2:30 a.m. April 29th.

According to police Misty Gray, who had borrowed the van, and Troy Bracket, had taken a small child to the emergency room for treatment. When Gray left the emergency room and was returning to the van, she found Kidd inside.

According to police Gray confronted Kidd. Kidd said he was in the van because the dome light was on. However, once he got inside he realized it wasn't on and that a light had just been reflected into the vehicle from the street.

The owner of the van, Gary Dillard, had left his check book in the van. Gray saw Kidd looking in the check book. Kidd told her he was looking in the check book for the registration to find out who owned the van.

Later Gary Dillard asked Gray where the money was he had in the check book.

Dillard told police he kept two $100 bills in the check book in case of an emergency.

When the hospital security supervisor spoke to Kidd about the incident, he told him he thought the light was on and was going to turn it off.

The supervisor told Kidd he shouldn't have been in the vehicle.

"Mr. Kidd stated that it was his police instinct coming out, and that it was a bone-headed thing to do," reads the document.

Kidd had agreed to meet with investigators but later called and said he had hired an attorney and didn't have time to meet with them.
