Last updated on Monday, May 7, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana Department of Transportation crews will close East 17th Street at its intersection with the Ind. 45/46 Bypass today as part of the bypass reconstruction project.

The intersection is scheduled to reopen May 31, though work in the area is not expected to be complete, according to INDOT spokesman Greg Prince.

Ind. 45/46 will be open to traffic, but motorists will not be able to turn onto 17th street, Prince said.

Starting Monday, 17th Street will be also be closed from Ind. 45/46 to near Jordan Avenue.

Fee Lane to Ind. 45/46 will be the detour route; access will be available on 17th Street from Fee Lane. Signs will be posted.

Jordan Avenue, north and south of 17th Street, will also be open to traffic, Prince said.
There will be no access to 17th Street from Lingelbach Lane.

"The whole project, they're pushing for Thanksgiving. That's kind of the goal," he said.
Construction crews will be widening sections of road, Prince said, and will be doing some road elevation work in the area.

"And basically, motorists traveling to the new bypass will have a right lane or a left lane turn there," he said of the completed work to the intersection of 17th and the Ind. 45/46 Bypass. The finished project will also feature a traffic light at that intersection.

More INDOT construction, road closing and detours are tentatively scheduled to start at the beginning of June in the area of 10th and the Bypass, Prince said.

Ind. 45 will be expanded to have two left turn lanes, one through lane and one right turn lane. This project may take four weeks to complete.

10th Street will be closed near Tulip Tree Apartments, and will also be expanded to have two left turn lanes, one through lane and one right turn lane. This project may take six weeks to complete.

INDOT officials are still working on the particulars of these June projects, Prince said.
A temporary three-way stop may be placed at Ind. 45 and Smith Road. Pete Ellis Drive may be used as a detour road.

INDOT urges all drivers to be aware of work zones, to practice safe driving habits and navigate all work zones with caution.
