(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Capt. Jeremy Bridges was named the Bedford Police Department officer of the year Tuesday.

The Bedford Kiwanis Club honored Bridges with a plaque and meal at S&L Creative Corner.

Bridges was honored for his dedication to the force.

"He is our newest K-9 officer," said Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley. "He is an all-around excellent officer, who gives 100 percent at all times. He is always available and determined to do his best."

On Jan. 6, Jeremy Bridges and his German shepherd, Ciro, answered their first call as the new K-9 team for the Bedford Police Department. After 16 years of working as a decoy to help other officers train their police dogs, Bridges now finds himself training the department's newest officer.

In November, a year and a half after being promoted to captain, Bridges was named K-9 officer. Shortly thereafter, on Nov. 8, he and fellow BPD officer and master trainer Michael Johnson left for Von der Haus Gill kennels in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to meet Ciro, a 16-month-old German shepherd who now lives and trains with Bridges.

Bridges was instrumental in the December arrest of 43-year-old Larry Frye, who alleged is responsible for a spree of bomb threats at three Bedford businesses and one Bloomington business.

"Capt. Bridges was in Wal-Mart and arrested Mr. Frye," Parsley says. "Officers were at the store investigating the third bomb threat at that business. Police were given a description and Capt. Bridges apprehended Frye."

Frye was arrested on charges of intimidation and false informing.
