BNL, Mitchell Game To Emphasize Fight Against Cancer

Last updated on Friday, May 4, 2012

(BEDFORD) - During the BNL home game against the Mitchell Bluejackets at 5 p.m. tonight, an emphasis will be placed on raising funds in the fight against cancer and on raising cancer awareness.

Bedford North Lawrence High School baseball coach Jerry Chaney and the Baseball Boosters Club have organized a "Strike Out Cancer" fundraising game night.

Students and community members from across the county showing their support by wearing "Hats for Hope" all day today. Each participant was asked to donate a $1 to the American Cancer Society. Students at BNL will be invited to wear hats and donate $1 during their first-period class.

Hats for Hope will not only raise funds, but also will raise awareness of local services such as the local Wig Bank, where cancer patients can get a free wig from a trained stylist.

The BNL Stars baseball team plans a hit-a-thon and the booster club will host other fundraising activities during the game.

By joining the American Cancer Society through Coaches vs. Cancer, area high school coaches spotlight the fact that, while cancer remains a major health concern, everyone can take daily steps to reduce their risk of the disease.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of high school and college coaches across the country, Coaches vs. Cancer participants have raised more than $75 million since 1993 to help the Society in such areas as: funding ground-breaking cancer research; providing up-to-date cancer information and education; advocating for public health policies that benefit communities, and delivering services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

A Strike Out Cancer game is planned for May 10 in Paoli when the Rams meet the Crawford County Wolfpack.
