(BLOOMINGTON) - A naked man armed with a gun was shot by two Bloomington police officers Friday morning in a neighborhood north of the IU campus.
Police say they ordered the man numerous time to drop the weapon, before they fired.
The unidentified man, described by police as "college-aged," was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with gunshot wounds to unspecified parts of his body. No police officers or bystanders were shot.
Indiana University spokesman Mark Land, confirmed the man is a student.
Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters says the man, after being shot, was takn to IU Bloomington Hospital and did have surgery, but no other information was released on his condition.
Police were called to the 300 block of East 15th Street at 6:53 a.m. for a report of a cursing and screaming man setting off fireworks. Police received a second call two minutes later with a report that a naked man was firing a gun into the back of a house.
The first officer who arrived heard gunshots, and other officers then saw a man in an alley behind a house, according to Chief Mike Diekhoff, who was at the scene of the shooting.
The man continued to fire shots, then moved from the alley to a sidewalk in front of the house, where he reportedly waved the gun around. Officers ordered him to stop, and when he didn't, one officer fired four shots and one shot struck the suspect, who fell to the ground, Diekhoff said.
The suspect sat back up and raised his gun again, as police ordered him to drop the weapon. A second officer fired another shot that hit him.
The identities of the police officers involved in the shooting have been released. Bloomington police are conducting an internal investigation into the shooting, Diekhoff said.
Margaret Greischar was eating her breakfast when she and her husband heard what they thought were fireworks going off.
Margaret called police.
Her husband, David, went to investigate.
It was then that the man, holding a gun and dressed only in shoes and a baseball cap, asked David "Which window would you like, sir."
The man, then ran up the alley and tried to get in the back door of the Greischar's home.
When the man couldn't get in the house, he opened fire.
Both the Greischars' cars, a Toyota Corolla and Toyota Camry were hit with bullets.
Another car, a Toyota Scion, belonging to a neighbor, was also hit.
Greischars' home was also riddled with bullets.
Residents at Terra Trace Apartments watched the incident from their balconies. Residents say the man shot lives in building C of Terra Trace.
When the man was shot, witnesses say he was shouting at officers, " don't Taze me,"
"man down," "soldier down" and "give me back my 9".
Police shot the man, after numerous attempts to have him drop his weapon.
Detectives recovered multiple shell casings from a 9mm handgun fired by the man at the scene.
