(BLOOMFIELD) - A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Greene County Jail inmate, who is being charged in connection with an April 22 battery incident in the Bloomfield-based lockup facility.
Nick Schneider, of the Greene County Daily World, reports a warrant was issued in Greene Superior Court on Monday for the arrest of Matthew Camden, 34, of Lyons, charging him with battery resulting in serious bodily injury -- a class C felony.
Camden has been in jail custody since his arrest in January on a dealing methamphetamine charge. Camden is awaiting a change of plea hearing in that case, which is set for May 25.
Camden is charged with the assault of inmate Christopher Polston, 23, of Indianapolis, who is being held on a battery charge.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Greene County Sheriff's Department Det. George Dallaire, Polston reported he was laying on his bunk in Cellblock C and Camden allegedly came into the cell with inmate Jeremy Hall. Polston said Camden began hitting him.
Polston said the attack was unprovoked, however, Camden allegedly did say something as he entered the cellblock, but the victim said he could not understand what was said, Dallaire wrote.
Polston allegedly was struck in the temple area of the head, the nose and the ribs. He stated that he went unconscious for short period.
"Inmate Polston said when he was hit in the ribs he heard a cracking sound," Dallaire wrote in the probable cause affidavit.
X-rays taken at Greene County General Hospital the day of the attack indicated that Polston suffered a broken nose and a possible rib fracture.
Camden denied involvement, saying he was working out with another inmate when the alleged attack occurred.
"Inmate Camden said if I was accusing him of this battery, he needed to talk to his attorney and this interview was terminated," Dallaire wrote in the probable cause affidavit.
Dallaire also interviewed all of the inmates in Cellblock C.
Hall said he witnessed Polston being battered, but didn't want to identify who did it until after he bonded out of jail.
Hall was being held on one count of dealing methamphetamine -- a class A felony, possession of at least three grams of methamphetamine -- a class C felony, possession of two or more chemical precursors -- a class D felony, possession of marijuana -- a class A misdemeanor, and maintaining a common nuisance -- a class D felony. Hall has a jury trial set for Oct. 2 in Greene Circuit Court.
Hall was released after posting $2,500 cash bond on April 30.
Hall then agreed to talk with Dallaire and said he accompanied Camden and to Polston's cell to ask him or his cellmate Douglas McCall if they had spit in Hall's food tray. Both denied the allegation.
Hall told police he believed they (Polston and McCall) were telling the truth and he thought someone made up the story about the spitting incident just to "create some drama."
Hall, who stated that he did not ask Camden to assault Polston, said Camden struck Polston "at least three times in the face and ribs," according to the probable cause affidavit.
