Bloomfield Farmer's Market Opens Saturday

Last updated on Wednesday, May 2, 2012

(BLOOMFIELD) - A year’s worth of planning and research have led to the official opening of the Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce sponsored Community Farmer’s Market this Saturday.

Sabrina Westfall, of the Greene County Daily World, reports that the Farmer's Market will officially open for the first time at 8 a.m., and remain open until noon on S. Franklin and W. Spring Sts. on the courthouse square in Bloomfield.

Farmer's Market coordinator Vickie Hatfield said there are six vendors pre-registered, but they do not have to attend every weekend. Vendor booths will include produce, crafts, blown glass, home made jewelry and more.

"We won't have many produce vendors until the products are in season," Hatfield noted.
It is $50 to set up for the season, or $10 for each weekend. If vendors set up for five weekends to meet the $50 fee they will be covered for the rest of the season.

"The Chamber isn't doing this to make money. We are looking for a way to bring the community together and provide nutritious produce," Hatfield explained.

Musicians of any style are encouraged to set up at the Farmer's Market to provide entertainment each Saturday, and will be allowed to play as long as they would like.
Hatfield noted the first market will be a little different this Saturday in comparison to future markets, with the town wide yard sale taking place the same day.

The "Host Tent" will be set up on the square with information about renting booth space and vendor information.

Several not-for-profit organizations will also be set up for this weekend only, and will be selling yard sale items.

Hatfield added Tri Kappa may be set up selling flowers.

If any churches or organizations are interested in setting up, or to be a vendor at the Farmer's Market, contact Hatfield by Friday at (317) 445-4180 or vickie.l.hatfield@saic.com .

Originally named the Bloomfield Farmer's Market, committee members decided to change the name to include all Greene County residents who would like to participate.
The Farmer's Market will run each Saturday from May 5 to Sept. 29.
As a part of the Bloomfield Community Revitalization promotion committee, members of the Chamber and the community visited several farmer's markets throughout the state to gather information.
Led by Hatfield, the Farmer's Market Committee gathered information regarding vendor fees, set up and entertainment ideas by visiting other markets throughout the area.
Hatfield explained the purpose of the Farmer's Market is to not only give local farmers, growers and artists a place to sell their product, but to promote Bloomfield as a tourist destination.
