(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Captains James Lindsey and Jeremy Bridges and Officer Anthony Wray were awarded letters of commendations at the Bedford Board of Works meeting Monday afternoon.
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says Major Danny Irwin requested the commendations.
The men were recognized for their efforts in attempting to save the life of 20-year-old Amanda Wolber who crashed her car into Leatherwood Creek on May 2nd.
Parsley says all three officers were off-duty when they responded to the accident scene, jumped into the creek after Wolber's Cutlass had clipped a post, glanced off a utility pole before going over the creek embankment. The vehicle overturned and was submerged in the creek.
Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill says Wolber was pronounced died at the scene from head injuries.
"They didn't know how deep the water was or what dangerous were at the bottom of the creek when they jumped in," Parsley said. "They did what they felt they had to do without regard to their own safety."
Parsley was also at the scene.
"I don't normally get chocked up, when I arrived these men were chest high in the water trying to do everything to save this young girl," Parsley says. "Their dedication and motivation to serve is a credit to the department."
