(COLUMBUS) - An 18-year-old Greenwood man has been preliminarily charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a C felony, after evidence showed someone fired a shot into an eastside Columbus home Sunday.
Colin Hemmer, 18, was arrested after an incident reported at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of North Brooks St., according to Columbus Police Department spokesman Matt Myers.
Eight officers responded and were assisted by Indiana State Police. A bullet entered one house, but no injuries were reported, according to its occupants.
"We don't normally respond with that many officers, but we initially weren't sure what we were dealing with," Myers said.
Officers found a bullet hole in a house on North Brooks St., the home next door to the one where Hemmer was visiting. Police then set up a perimter and used a loudspeaker to have all five occupants of the house where Hemmer was visiting to. come outside.
Hemmer admitted to police he fired a weapon in the house. But he told officers he didn't know it was real.
Officers found and confiscated a .410-gauge sawed-off shotgun with pistol grips in the house occupied by Hemmer. Myers indicated that that style of weapon is illegal.
Officers, led by Columbus Police Detective Chris Couch, are investigating the weapon's registration. The people living in the house with the bullet hole said they do not know their neighbors and have never met.
"We don't believe there was a disturbance inside the house (where the shot was believed to have originated), or a disturbance between the neighbors," Myers said.
