(SALEM) - A portable defibrillator for the Domestic Violence Shelter.
Shoes for children served by the JumpStart program at Salem Community Schools.
A laptop computer for the preschool program at the YMCA.
Marcia Walker, of the Salem Leader reports that Saturday afternoon, a group of ladies sat around drinking tea and while doing that, raised enough money to cover costs of those items - and more.
It was the second annual Giving From the Heart Tea, organized by the Women's Giving Circle of the Washington County Community Foundation. The tea, attended by approximately 120 ladies, was held at Southern Hills Church.
"We were very pleased . . . we had a wonderful turnout, more than last year," Judy Johnson, executive director of the foundation, said.
For a $50 donation to the foundation's Women's Fund, those attending the tea were given a ballot and voted on which groups would receive grants. Five organizations submitted requests totaling $7,338. Enough was raised to fund every request.
In addition to the portable defibrillator, the shelter will use its $2,040 for cribs and bunk beds. Washington County SOAR! received $1,208 to cover costs of brochures and membership fees to professional organizations.
Youth First will use its $1,290 grant for training and start-up costs of a parenting program. The preschool program at the YMCA has a smart board, and thanks to the $1,000 from the foundation, now will be able to purchase the laptop needed to make that work.
JumpStart received a $1,800 grant; $1,000 will be used to purchase shoes and $800 to cover costs of filing fees for nonprofit status.
"Bottom line, we were able to help five organizations in our community and that's what the Giving Circle is all about," Johnson said. "Everyone who attended felt good about being part of the process."
