(CAMPBELLSBURG) - A concerned citizen who reported suspicious activity is credited with leading police to two men allegedly stealing copper wire.

James Knight, 26, and Johnathon Harold, 28; both of Mitchell; were arrested near Campbellsburg last week.

Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, of the Leader-Democrat, reports that a passing motorist, headed west on State Road 60, saw two men. One of those men appeared to be carrying wire according to Campbellsburg Town Marshal David Nicholson. The women then called 911 to report it.

When Nicholson located the men, he saw them rolling up copper wire belonging to the railroad and directed them to stop. The two men then took off on foot. Knight heeded Nicholson's command a short time later, but Harold continued on. He was apprehended by Deputy Brad Naugle of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Indiana State Police Trooper Nathan Teusch assisted as well.

Both men were transported to the detention center. Knight is charged with theft, a D felony, and railroad mischief, a misdemeanor. Harold faces those charges as well as resisting arrest and fleeing.

Nicholson said the two had a relatively small amount of wire. "It was probably valued at less than $50 total. It's kind of a shame someone was willing to go to jail over that."

He said the decision of the motorist to report what she saw was key. "It was extremely important. Without that concerned citizen we never would've had any idea they were there. It was just by chance she happened to look over that way."
