(ORLEANS) - A 9-year-old girl was hit by a car and taken by helicopter to the University of Louisville Sunday night.

Madison Clark, of Orleans, was riding her bike at the intersection of Liberty and Vincennes Streets in Orleans when she was hit by a pickup truck driven by 37-year-old Joshua Cook, of Mitchell.

According to Orleans Police Chief Roy McFarland the accident happened at 6:52 p.m. Sunday.

McFarland says Clark was riding her bike south on Liberty Street and was hit by a 1999 Ford Ranger driven by Cook. Cook was traveling west on Liberty when Clark entered the intersection and Cook was unable to stop and hit the bike.

Clark was taken to IU Health of Paoli by ambulance and then airlifted to University of Louisville.

Assisting at the scene was the Orange County Sheriff Department.
