(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer identified three men who were killed in a fiery crash late Monday.
The victims are 23-year-old Nathan Gaudet, of Bedford and 24-year-old Justin Thomas and 23-year-old Sean McClanahan, both of Georgetown.
Meyer is awaiting results from toxicology tests before making a final determination on what caused the three men's deaths.
According to police reports the car was southbound on Victor Pike when the driver missed a curve, drove off the road and hit a tree. When Bloomington Sheriff Department deputies arrived the car was engulfed in flames.
Gaudet's parents traveled to Bloomington from Moline, Ill., on Wednesday to meet with investigators and to retrieve their son's remains.
Back in 2005, Gaudet was a participant in the strangulation murder and dismemberment of Adrianne Reynolds, a 16-year-old Moline girl who was killed by two of Gaudet's friends as the high school students drove to Taco Bell for lunch one January day.
The case was detailed in 2006 on Dateline NBC.
Gaudet, then 16, admitted using his grandfather's hand saw to cut off the victim's head and arms so the body could not be identified through dental records or fingerprints. The dismemberment happened after his friends' attempt to burn the girl's body failed.
Gaudet's grandmother, suspecting her grandson's involvement, found the saw hidden in a backpack in her basement and gave it to police. One of the killers, a girl, was found guilty of the murder. The other, a boy, pleaded guilty to murder.
Gaudet, charged with concealment for helping to dismember Reynolds' body, pleaded guilty. He served nearly four years in juvenile detention and was released in November 2008 when he was 20.
Some time since then, he moved to Bedford.
