(SHOALS) - Commissioner Dan Gregory, along with Richard Burch from Midwest Engineers, spoke to the Martin County Council Monday night about repairs needed on the exterior of the jail.
Courtney Hughett, of Washington Times-Herald, reports more money was going to be needed than originally estimated. Burch explained the stucco on the outside of the jail is failing and metal will be put over the top of it.
He said the process of installing the architectural metal is more labor intensive than they anticipated. The low bid came in at $119,000 and the high bid was $141,000.
Burch said he had recommended to the commissioners, and now the council that they go with the low bid through Craftsman Construction out of Huntingburg. He said the project is not going to get any cheaper and the damage is going to continue to get worse.
"I would recommend that someway, somehow, you find the funds to go ahead and proceed with the project," said Burch.
Gregory said that with engineering and everything, the final cost is going to be $131,500 with the amount budgeted being $112,500 causing a shortage of $19,000 not including overruns.
He said $19,000 was the minimum needed but thought $25,000 would be better in case the project went over.
Auditor Nancy Steiner reported that there is $65,000 in the EDIT fund with $20,000 in the miscellaneous line item.
The council decided to use the full $20,000 from miscellaneous and the commissioners could return if they needed more money.
According to Burch, the work could begin within the next 30 days with completion to happen within 90-120 days. A penalty of $1,000 per day is given if not completed in that timeframe.
