Lions Plan Pancake Festival

Last updated on Friday, April 13, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Lions Club is finalizing plans for two of its annual events: the Youth Appreciation Program on April 23 and the 62nd Pancake Festival on May 5.

Several youths from junior high through high school will be honored at the Youth Appreciation Program at 7 p.m. April 23 at First Assembly of God Church. They will be honored for their involvement in school, community and church activities.

The program first began in 1967 under sponsorship of the Bedford Breakfast Optimist Club, with Bill Morris serving as chairman. The Bedford Lions Club took the program over in 1997, and Lion Morris is still spearheading the event and serving as its emcee.

"In the past five years, an average of 30 youngsters each year have been honored, with 37 youths in 2008 being one of the largest groups," commented Morris. "The honorees are nominated by local clubs and organizations, schools, and churches."

Pancake Festival tickets are now being sold by members of the Bedford Lions Club, and prices will remain the same as last year - $5 for those age 13 and over and $3 for children 12 and under. The festival takes place at Thornton Park Pavilion, and the menu will include pancakes, sausage, coffee or milk.

Carry-out orders will also be available at a drive-through lane on the south side of the pavilion. Those wishing carry-out should follow the entrance signs south of the Bedford Parks Department office and place their orders at the designated stop area.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 332, sponsored by Free Methodist Church, will assist the Lions at the festival, and members of Phi Beta Psi sorority will wash dishes. Shawswick Middle School cheerleaders will assist at the tables.

Serving as co-chairmen of the festival this year are Lions Mike Berry, Butch Fish, Jim Fisher, Jon Heichelbech, Burel Houchin and Phil Mitchell. Proceeds from the Pancake Festival will be used for a number of worthwhile local projects.
