IU Student Dies Of Injuries From Balcony Fall

Last updated on Monday, April 23, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University student who fell from a balcony early Friday has died from her injuries.

The Monroe County Coroner confirmed that 20-year-old Linden Whitt died Saturday afternoon. Whitt and Joseph Lao, also 20, were on a balcony at the University Village Apartments in the 1300 block of N. Lincoln Street around 3 a.m. Friday when the accident occurred.

Bloomington Police Lt. Bill Parker said Whitt suffered a neck injury when she and Lao fell eight feet from an apartment's balcony.

A witness told police Whitt was standing in front of Lao, when he lost his balance and both fell over the railing to the ground. The witness also said Whitt may have hit the ground first, with Lao landing on top of her.

Whitt was reportedly unresponsive and did not have a pulse when medics arrived, so officers and other first responders began CPR. Both victims were taken to IU Health-Bloomington.

Lao told officers he had been consuming vodka prior to the fall.

Whitt was a 2010 graduate of Penn High School in Mishawaka.

The status of Lao's injuries was not known.
