IU Professor One Of Times 100 Most Influential People

Last updated on Friday, April 20, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - IU now counts one of the 100 most influential people in its midst.

Elinor Ostrom, Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science, was named to Time magazine's 2012 list of the top 100 most influential people.

"This is a great honor, and one that I never would have expected," Ostrom said in a press release. "Certainly it reflects well on the research that has been done, and continues to be done, by our many colleagues at the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University."

Ostrom received the 2009 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, more commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, for her contribution to the analysis of economic governance. She shared the prize with corecipient Oliver Williamson of University of California, Berkeley.

Michael McGinnis, professor and director of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, said he is lucky to have worked alongside Ostrom for many years.

"I think it's wonderful, a well-deserved recognition of her remarkable influence on both policy and scholarship," McGinnis said in an email. "She has a unique ability to combine rigorous research methods and policy relevant conclusions. She's a wonderful friend and colleague."

The Time 100, as the list is referred to, is released annually and is now in its ninth year. The issue featuring the list was released onto stands today.

"The Time 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world, it's not a list of the smartest people in the world, it's a list of the most influential people in the world," Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel said in a press release.

"They're scientists, they're thinkers, they're philosophers, they're leaders, they're icons, they're artists, they're visionaries -- people who are using their ideas, their visions, their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people."

Ostrom joins the company of individuals such as Jeremy Lin, Rihanna and Hillary Clinton.

Ostrom is currently traveling and was not able to be reached for comment.
