Last updated on Sunday, April 15, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - IU officials announced that Booker T Jones and U.S. Ambassador David Carden will serve as spring commencement speakers in May at IU-Bloomington.

Jones is a Grammy Award-winning soul artist, songwriter, record producer and arranger, and he is also an alumnus of the IU Jacobs School of Music. He will receive an IU honorary doctorate of music at the commencement exercises May 5, according to the press release.

It was announced that the undergraduate ceremonies will be conducted in two sessions, the first at 10 a.m. and the second at 3 p.m. on May 5, both at Assembly Hall.

Carden, who started serving in his role as ambassador in April 2011 and was a partner at Jones Day, a leading international law firm, will be addressing students receiving graduate degrees on May 4, according to a press release.

Carden will also serve as the keynote speaker at a separate ceremony for those graduating from the IU Maurer School of Law. The Maurer ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5 in the IU Auditorium.

"All of us at Indiana University are extremely honored that these two remarkably distinguished alumni will address our graduates this spring," IU President Michael McRobbie said in a press release. "Booker T Jones and Ambassador David L. Carden come from very different fields, yet both share a trailblazing spirit, unyielding work ethic and strong belief in the power of education to achieve their highest ambitions."
