(LINTON) - Greene County General Hospital is taking a proactive approach by serving as epicenter for a disaster preparedness drill May 3.
The Greene County Daily World reports GCGH officials have worked hard to create policies and procedures, now it's time to test them.
"It's just being proactive and testing the policies we have in place," said Amy Miller, who serves as head of quality assurance/performance improvement.
With newly implemented technology, Miller said, the drill will ensure procedures and policies are current.
Local police, fire, and other emergency personnel will also take part in the drill.
The training will test and/or evaluate the internal incident command center, district command, movement of resources, and other functions vital during a disaster.
"It will be a really good training program," said Plant Operations Manager Dewey Collins.
The training, which will be coordinated through Lighthouse Readiness Group, is fully funded through a grant.
While an influx of emergency vehicles and volunteers for the event are to be expected, patient care will not be affected.
"It shouldn't affect patient care at all," Collins said. "We will operate as usual. Patient care comes first."
While hospital patrons may notice additional people (volunteers) outside of the hospital, Miller noted it will not affect the emergency room or other services offered by the hospital. The influx is directly related to the disaster drill.
Miller said Twins Rivers will be sending students to participate in the drill as volunteers. It's possible that some of the students will have makeup applied to look like accident victims.
During the event, which starts at 9 a.m. and will last approximately 4 hours, the hospital's lighted sign on the highway will announce that a disaster drill is in place. The hospital's website - www.greenecountyhospital.com - will announce the drill. In addition, the hospital's Facebook page will note the drill.
