(BLOOMINGTON) - 30-year-old Michael James Crockett, who was driving a stolen Chevrolet Tahoe, was arrested after he led Bloomington police on a chase Sunday afternoon.

On off-duty Bloomington police officer saw Crockett driving the stolen Tahoe leaving the College Mall around 12:20 p.m.

Crockett was wanted on a warrant for allegedly breaking into the home of the owner of Tahoe on March 24th. Police say Cockett hit the homeowner with a hammer and then pointed a gun at them and demanded the keys to the Tahoe.

Police chased Crockett on Allendale Drive where he flew through the intersection at Rhorer Road and South Walnut Street Pike, almost hitting several vehicles. He then crashed the Tahoe into a utility pole at the intersection of South Walnut Street Pike and Fairfax Road, just outside the Bloomington Speedway.

Crockett stumbled from the wreck and police arrested him at gunpoint.

Crockett was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital after complaining of pain.

Police searched the Tahoe and found a backpack in the passenger's seat with a gun inside.Officers also found a large, possibly stolen safe in the back seat, some papers, and some broken-down cardboard boxes, police said.

Court records show Crockett is no stranger to law enforcement.

In March 2007, police accused Crockett of demanding methadone at gunpoint from a resident on Cedar Drive. The man who drove Crockett to the home told police Crockett got out wearing a black ski mask and a hooded sweatshirt.

Monroe County sheriff's detectives back then questioned Crockett about the death of an 81-year-old man who was found dead in a truck parked in Dogwood Estates in Ellettsville the year before, less than 1 1/2 miles away from Cedar Drive, in what police believe may have been a home-invasion robbery.
