(AVOCA) - Lawrence County Police arrested 42-year-old Troy Stotts, of Bedford, on charges of impersonating a police officer.

According to a probable cause affidavit Stotts began following Kegahn Holmes on Ind. 37 as she was on her way home from school.

Stotts, driving a maroon car, pulled behind her car on Ind. 37 and began flashing his headlights and followed her to the Avoca Mini-mart on Ind. 54 where she stopped her vehicle.

There her passenger, Grant Simpson got out and Stotts asked him for identification.

Simpson's mother, Missy, who was in the mini-mart came out and asked what was going on.

Stotts said he was a cop and he had observed Holmes' car going 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. Missy Simpson questioned him about being a police officer and he offered to show a badge. She, however, told him she didn't need to see it because she knew who he was and knew he wasn't a police officer.

Stotts then fumbled through his wallet, presumably for a badge, but never produced one, got back in his car and drove away.

Stotts was released from jail after he posted $755 bail Friday.
