5-Year-Old's Foot Severed After Falling From Lawn Tractor

Last updated on Thursday, April 5, 2012

(COLUMBUS) - A 5-year-old Elizabethtown boy suffered injuries to one of his feet today after he fell off a riding lawn tractor his father was driving.

Jace Whitis, 5, was flown to Riley Hospital for Children after the accident at the Whitis home on 11th Street in Elizabethtown, authorities said.

Maj. Todd Noblitt of Bartholomew County Sheriff's department said one of the boy's feet was partially severed. He did not know which foot.

Whitis was riding with his father, Jeff Whitis, at about 4:30 p.m. when he fell off the tractor trying to retrieve a wrench he had dropped, Noblitt said.

A next door neighbor, Tyler Green, and his girlfriend, Laci Sallee, who had just moved in a couple of days ago, heard the accident and ran outside to help, Noblitt said.

Sallee, who is a patient care technician at Johnson Memorial Hospital, held Jace Whitis while Green, who has EMT training, provided first aid and controlled the bleeding until emergency workers arrived.

A medical helicopter landed at the Elizabethtown park to fly Whitis to Indianapolis.
Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department, Columbus Regional Hospital ambulance and LifeLine helicopter assisted at the scene.
