Last updated on Friday, April 27, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Lions Club recently honored 18 Lawrence County youths for their involvement in school, church and community activities.

Claude Parson reports, more than 100 people attended the event, which was the Lions Club's annual Youth
Appreciation Program. The location was First Assembly of God Church, and the emcee was Lion Bill Morris, who has chaired the program since its inception.

Bob Bridge, columnist for the Times-Mail, was guest speaker. He complimented the youths on making good life choices, adding that "it is reassuring to know we have such good, young leaders to count on in the future."

Bridge emphasized that "one good-hearted person can make a discernible difference," and left the youths with one of his favorite Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes: "It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself."

The honored youths ranged in age from middle school through high school. Each was cited as "an outstanding youth who has unselfishly given time and/or talent for the betterment of the community."

They were not only cited for academic achievement, but also for work with church, club and school groups, as well as involvement in various ways with other organizations.
The representatives of organizations nominating the youths mentioned their participation in athletic and church programs, their service as role models to youngsters, and abilities as leaders in many ways.
