(BROWNSTOWN) - Fourth graders have been working on their family history at the Jackson County History Center’s Genealogy Library in Brownstown.
The project was put together by teacher Amy Hartley with the help of genealogy researcher Nancy Burge.
Burge has visited the class one day for the past three weeks to help students establish a four-generation genealogy. Now that the project is complete many of the students have continued to search into their family history.
Burge taught children how to use their best resources, family members to learn about the past, censuses records, death certificates, marriage licenses and church, funeral home and cemetery records to put together family group charts.
Now the children will put the information they have learned into a book form. The book will include copies of records, newspaper clippings and photos.Copies of the books will be given to the library and can be used for research in the future.
Hartley said the project is about more than genealogy and history. She added it will help students with writing, organizational and research skills.
Three other Jackson County History Center volunteers, Margo Brewer, Sharon Guthrie and Debbie Holle helped students with their research.
