(UNDATED) - Jackson county teens can spend their spring break gaining a better understanding of homelessness and poverty.
Sonja Scott, an AmeriCorps worker at Big Brothers Big Sisters says the idea is to help young adults become more interested and involved in their community.
On Friday students can participate in Shack-A-Thon. There will be a movie and discussion and then youth will use cardboard boxes and newspapers to build their own shelter outdoors and then spend the night in them. Scott says it will give students the chance to experience homelessness.
During the week youth will be able to volunteer helping the homeless and hungry at Anchor House Shelter and Community Provisions Food Pantry in Seymour. Students will be helping with the distribution of food and other needed tasks,
Shifts are available at Anchor House on March 19 and March 22 and at Provisions on March 20 and March 23. Students will be helping with the distribution of food and other needed tasks, Scott said.
On March 21, young volunteers will step up to build a playhouse in the parking lot at Home Depot in Seymour that will be raffled to benefit Habitat for Humanity. All materials are being donated by Home Depot.
Jason Enrique, a first-year AmeriCorps worker with Big Brothers Big Sisters, said the event will be a positive and rewarding experience for those involved.

Preregistration is encouraged, but youth are welcome to sign up Friday at the Shack-a-Thon.
Parents will need to sign a consent form.
