Man Guilty Of Incest Receives 10 Year Sentence

Last updated on Monday, March 19, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - 36-year-old Michael B. Buckner of Seymour received a 10-year prison sentence Friday in Jackson Circuit Court.

Buckner is accused of fathering a child with a teenage relative in 2010.

Judge Bill Vance sentenced Buckner to two five-year prison terms after he pleading guilty to two counts of incest, a Class C felony. The state agreed to dismiss a third count. He also received 284 days credit and 284 days of credit time.

Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Chalfant said after the hearing that it was hard to be happy about anything in the case, including the sentence.

Buckner pleaded guilty on Feb. 13. Vance told Buckner the victims would have to live with the crimes the rest of their lives, and that Buckner took advantage of an opportunity he created when he let the relative move in in 2009.

Buckner said he was not a bad guy and that he wants to try to make things better for all involved, including the child he fathered.

Buckner said alcohol and post-traumatic stress from his time in Iraq with the military were factors in his actions.
