Seniors Missing Out On Paid Benefits

Last updated on Thursday, March 1, 2012

(UNDATED) - $20 billion in free and low-cost support is going unclaimed by millions of Americans, according to a recent report from the National Council on Aging (NCOA).

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging (IAAAA) have teamed up to help Hoosiers access their benefits. The You Gave, Now Save campaign provides seniors with direct access to three resources:

BenefitsCheckUp: The most comprehensive nationwide web-based service that offers information on benefits programs regarding Medicare and limited income resources. Visit www.benefitscheckup.org for more information.

Eldercare Locator: The nationwide service that connects older adults and their caregivers nationwide with information on senior services. Visit www.eldercare.gov or call 1-800-677-1116 for more information.

On-line Guide: A free on-line guide to benefits available to seniors at www.iaaaa.org .

"It's important that seniors know these aren't handouts or welfare," says IAAAA CEO Kristen LaEace. "Older adults have worked hard their entire lives and already paid into these programs which are designed specifically to support them."

The IAAAA urges seniors to contact their local Area Agency on Aging at 800-986-3505 with any questions and for assistance in accessing these resources.

The Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging, founded in 1978, advocates for quality programs and services for older adults and all persons with disabilities. The IAAAA works with Indiana's 16 Area Agencies on Aging. The Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) were created by state statute in 1973 to deliver services under the Older Americans Act. AAAs are not-for-profit entities providing services to older adults and people with disabilities of any age and their caregivers.
