New Activities At Dogwood Festival

Last updated on Monday, March 12, 2012

(ORLEANS) - 2012 Dogwood Festival Chairperson Tami Ehinger updated board members on the plans for this year’s 44th annual celebration of the blooming of the dogwood.

This year's theme is "My Hometown is..." reflecting a celebration of the Orleans community. The festival line up will include some brand new events including an air walk, hot air balloon glow on parade weekend, bed races and additional live musical entertainment.

Sponsorships at different levels are being now sought by Ehinger and festival organizers for a number of the special festival events and all corporate and business sponsors will be included in any and all print type materials, radio ads and live announcements.

Chamber Executive Director Robert Henderson stressed that the festival, which now operates under umbrella of the Chamber continues to solely rely on volunteers to make the festival a success every year. "Only with renewed interest and dedication to the festival can ensure the festival's success going forward from this year on," he said.
Both Henderson and Ehinger will be guests of WBIW radio's live "Talk of the Town" show on the morning of March 15 to talk about this year's festival events.

The Chamber's ever popular Town-Wide Yard Sale will again be a part of the opening weekend activities with everyone who wants to have a yard or garage sale on both April 27 and April 28.

Wendy Sprigler will again chair the Chamber's main fundraiser of the year the Silent Auction. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Chamber many on-going type community improvement projects.

Board member and Dogwood Parade Chairman Randy Clark reported that entries were now being accepted for the parade on May 5 and hopes everyone will consider being part of the parade this year. Clark said all type of entries are being sought including area businesses, church, service club type floats, walking units, and musical units etc. Entry forms are available on the festival website www.orleansdogwoodfestival.com and from the Orleans Town Office and Orleans Library.

Greta Lewellyn shared plans for the first ever "Dogwood Shop Hop" to be held on the first weekend of the festival on Friday and Saturday, in conjunction with the town-wide yard sale. Shoppers visiting Orleans on those days will have the opportunity to pick up a special "shopping pass" card at any one of the participating town merchants, visit the shop to collect their initials, and then once the card is completed, drop off at any of the participating stores. One lucky winner will win a $50 gift certificate from the retailers.
