(MEDORA) - With with the help of Smokey the Bear; Joe Kelsay, Director of the Indiana Department of Agriculture, officially opened the fourth annual National Maple Syrup Festival in Medora by tapping the ceremonial sugar maple.
The festival, will be open this Saturday and Sunday, includes activities at Medora Community Schools, where pancakes with maple syrup are served. It's also where festival-goers could catch a bus ride to Burton's Maplewood Farms.
Kelly Turner, Tim Burton's sister and another organizer of the festival, said the first day of the four-day event is always Camp About Face Day.
Camp About Face is a summer camp operated by Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for youth with cranio-facial anomalies.
Kelly and her husband, Kenny Turner, founded the Heads Up!!! Foundation after their daughter Katelyn "Katy" Turner was born with a cleft lip and palate. Proceeds from the festival go to the foundation, which in turn supports Camp About Face.
Kelly Turner said youth who have attended Camp About Face show up on the first day of the festival and help by conducting tours and in other ways.
Camp About Face is held at Bradford Woods in the Martinsville area.
This year's festival is the fourth, and Kelly Turner said it's become easier every year to put the festival together.
