Monroe County Township Trustee Under Fire

Last updated on Saturday, March 3, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The state board of accounts says a Monroe County township trustee should repay $78,000.

This is in what it says are improperly documented expenses.

Republicans have been attacking Benton Township Trustee Heather Cohee for putting her husband and daughter on the payroll as clerks -- Cohee says they've done cleaning and other work for the township.

A state audit finds the township actually underpaid Todd Cohee by 900 dollars -- but says Heather Cohee and her daughter got about $4,000 more in salary than they were supposed to. And auditors say there's not documentation to justify reimbursements to all three Cohees for phone calls, mileage and other expenses.

The board wants Heather Cohee to pay back a total of nearly $98,000 dollars, including $13,000 dollars for the cost of the audit.
