(MITCHELL) - The city of Mitchell would like to apply for a housing repair grant for its residents, but first officials want to know how much interest is out there.
The grant money would allow qualifying homeowners, within the city of Mitchell, to obtain funding that would repair their homes. Often, it means new heating and cooling units, windows, siding, roofs, electrical upgrades and the removal of lead-based paint. Each qualifying homeowner could get up to $20,000 in home repairs and improvements.
The city of Mitchell has not received the funding, but if the money is awarded, the city anticipates improving 18-20 homes. The city plans to apply for the grant funding through Administrative Resources association soon, but wants local homeowners to apply for the program to see if there is interest in the idea and how much money would have to be obtained.
To qualify, the owner must be older than 55, meet income requirements and live in a single-family home. Informational meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 2 at City Hall, prior to the regular council meeting, and another one will be at noon on April 4, also at City Hall. Applications for the program will be available at both meetings. Homeowners who are interested in applying for the program should plan to attend one of the meetings.
