Mitchell Approves Alternative School and Calendar

Last updated on Wednesday, March 14, 2012

(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees voted to open a non-traditional alternative school in Mitchell.

Superintendent Steve Phillips recommended the purchase a modular home from Thorne Homes for $64,970 to be placed on the Emerson school lot between the existing basketball court and the west side parking lot. The trailer will be paid for with funding from the state.

Phillips said the alternative school would help some students with behavior problems stay in school and help get the graduation rate closer to the state average.
In other business he board adopted a school calendar for the 2012-13 school year. Phillips recommended the adoption of a more traditional school calendar since North Lawrence had adopted that type of calendar. That way there would be no conflict with the vocational and special need classes.

Phillips said that if all goes according to plan, Mitchell would be able to have its
graduation one week before Bedford North Lawrence instead of the same day.
