(BLOOMINGTON) - 70-year-old Jon Kyle, of Indianapolis, was killed Thursday, when his Jeep was hit by a tractor-semitrailer on Ind. 45 near Breeden Road in Southwestern Monroe County.
According to Chief Deputy Mike Peshing, the driver of the semi and two witnesses all say there was "no way" the driver could have missed the red Jeep Liberty that pulled into his path from a driveway just southwest of Stanford around 2 p.m.
Pershing says it is unclear from reports whether the passenger in Kyle's vehicle, his wife, 70-year-old Sara Kyle, or the driver of the semi, 40-year-old Glenn Helton, were injured in the crash.
One witness in a red pickup truck told police he had to swerve to miss being caught in the crash himself.
A second serious crash followed on the same highway as police cleared traffic and debris for hours. Indiana State Police investigated the wreck that involved an Indiana Railroad tractor-semitrailer rig driven by 39-year-old Alan Ervin, of Linton and a white passenger car, driven by 47-year-old Howard Hickey, of Knosha, Wis., near Greene County Chapel.
Emergency responders cut Hickey, from his car and took him to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment of chest pains. Ervin was not injured.
Police say for an unknown reason Hickey veered into the southwest lane of traffic and crashed into the driver's side of the semi.
