(COLUMBUS) - The Bartholomew County Library has hired off-duty sheriff’s deputies to help keep order after problems arose with some teenage patrons.
The deputies work for several hours on weekdays after area schools let out.
Library Director Beth Booth Poor said library staff realized about a month ago that they had "more troublemakers than we could handle at one time" and decided to bring in extra help.
Students in their early teens were intimidating other youth and disturbing adult patrons, said Sonya Stretshberry, library circulation manager.
Two off-duty deputies work each day after school and are paid $25 per hour. The library is drawing from a pool of nine officers, and a 10th deputy will become available in May, Poor said.
The staff has already noticed a reduction in problems thanks to the deputies.
Poor said the library will continue to hire officers for an indefinite amount of time.
