Lawrence County Volunteer Firefighters To Take EMS Training

Last updated on Wednesday, March 28, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Council approved the payment of $2,000 for 20 volunteer firefighters to take an EMS training at IU Health Bedford Hospital on May 7th.

The hospital is providing the training at a discounted price and the county has agreed to pay for the firefighters books.

"I believe this is something we really need and are asking you to find the money...we would appreciate it," said Steve Nolan, Chief of Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department and President of the Lawrence County Firefighters Association. "This training will benefit everyone in the county and will save lives."

Nolan gave the council an example:

"If someone is sick or injured in Heltonville we can be there in minutes where it would take an ambulance 15 to 20 minutes to arrive, and that is just too late in an emergency," Nolan says.

Council President Jim Edwards agreed.

"We need to look in our pocketbooks and hearts and get this done," he say.

The council agreed and asked County Auditor Billey Tumey to look at the budget and get back to the council.

The training is not limited to one department, firefighters from every department in the county will attend.

The council also approved the Lawrence County Public Defender Agency to hire Bedford Attorney John Howery as a full-time temporary public defender, until Chief Public Defender Lorinda Youngcourt can hire a new entry level attorney for the agency.

Howery will be replacing Nathan Nikirk, who has resigned to do private practice.

In other business:

* Joe Dibert, director of the Lawrence County Community Corrections asked the council to approve transfers for the department. One transfer will cover the cost of materials used in the juvenile probation curriculum. The other transfer was to cover a shortage for fuel expenses.

* Sheriff Sam Craig told the council the department has applied for the COP's Grant.
