Last updated on Monday, March 5, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - A six-member jury convicted a 33-year-old Jefferson County man on animal cruelty charges.

Leslie Richardson received a one-year prison term for the Class A misdemeanor conviction for cruelty to an animal.

Richardson was charged in November 2011 with mutilating or torturing a vertebrate animal, a Class D felony, but the jury convicted him on the lesser charge.

According to court records Richardson, who was angry with the dog, punched the dog 10 to 15 times. The dog bite Richardson while he was hitting it. Richardson then threw the dog off the second floor deck.

Richardson told police he hit the dog because it had nipped at one of the kids.

The dog lost its left eye in the incident. The dog was taken to the local humane society and then treated by a veterinarian.
