IU Campus MovieFest Competition Kicks Off

Last updated on Friday, March 23, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - Campus MovieFest has hit Bloomington, and aspiring filmmakers have a shot at showing their films.

Nona Tepper reports the Campus MovieFest is the world's largest student film festival. Beginning March 22, individuals have one week to submit five-minute original movies. Recognition will be made in the categories of Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Picture and AT&T Best Use of Mobile.

The festival is presented by the Indiana Memorial Union Board, Bloomington Artists Agency, Residence Hall Association, Hollywood Hoosiers, Hoosier Eye Doctor and Best Buy.

Winners will be invited to the Northern Regional Grand Finale in New York to compete against 14 other schools in the region. The International Grand Finale at Paramount Studios will take place in Los Angeles.

From there, winning films can be seen in-flight on board Virgin America airlines, on AT&T phones and at Campus MovieFest events at the Cannes Film Fesival. Participants can also win MacBook Air laptops, iPods, AT&T video phones, Final Cut Studio software and project grants.

Last year, then-IU senior Gesumino Ahu-Rulli won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his film "Sparks," a tale of two cyborgs who fall in love after they receive hearts. In five minutes, the movie tells a story of freedom and unrequited love. It was Ahu-Rulli's third honor from the Campus MovieFest.

IU's MovieFest began Thursday at noon, in the Indiana Memorial Union Sassafras Room. Each team will receive an Apple laptop loaded with iMovie and Final Cut editing software, digital video cameras and AT&T videophones. Technical support and software training will be provided.

Completed films will be judged at 7:30 p.m. April 9 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre. The screening is free and open to the public.
