(DALE) - The Indiana Department of Transportation says planned improvements to a intersection of the new four-lane U. S. 231 near Dale will make the highway safer.

The intersection of 231 and Indiana State road 62 just southwest of Dale has been the site of two fatal traffic accidents in the past year.

INDOT officials say the angled left turn lanes will be straightened and two overhead signs will be installed this summer.

Work has already begun on one of the left-hand turn lanes.
Now motorists can still use the highway and make left turns at the intersection while the work is being done.

The new U.S. 231 in northern Spencer County was opened to traffic in March of 2011.
Since the highway was opened, the intersection with state road 62 as well as the nearby intersection with state road 68 have been the sites of numerous traffic accidents including several fatalities.

The turn-lane improvements should be completed on or before May 15th. The overhead signs will be installed later this summer.
