(BLOOMFIELD) - The Greene County Commissioners are considering lowering the speed limit on several roads - creating safer driving conditions.
Nick Schneider, of the Greene County Daily World reported Commissioner Rick Graves called on the other two commissioners - Steve Lindsey and Kermit Holtsclaw - to designate on a map which roads they would like to see the speed limit decreased.
Currently, unless specifically marked the speed limit on all county roads is 55 mph.
Graves pointed out that now is the time to pick the roads because the county will soon be ordering signs for its county-wide signage program.
Graves also requested of attorney Marilyn Hartman a listing of the speeds on the county roads to determine if there are some that have already had their speed reduced, but signs have not been erected.
Holtsclaw said in his district some roads have speed limits posted that are not being observed by motorists.
"Most people are not obeying them. They drive (the speed) they want to do," he said.
Graves would like some feedback from the other two commissioners soon because the county is expected to bid the signage program in the near future.
Janssen and Spaans Engineering, Inc. of Indianapolis has a contract to provide construction-engineering services for the project.
The placement contract is scheduled to be let and should take about one year to complete, according to Mike Armstrong of Janssen and Spaans.
The county has received a $917,000 road sign replacement grant to pay for the re-signage work.
