(BLOOMINGTON) - Later this week, four Bedford residents will play a significant role in helping to convey the message that individuals with disabilities participate in and contribute to the community in many ways.
The four are Lawrence County LARC Center clients Nancy Vibart, Vicky Smith, Troy Stewart and Jonathon Hendrix, all of whom will be part of a nine-member cast that will present a theatrical production called "I Am You" this weekend. The show demonstrates that those who are disabled share the same kinds of emotions, goals and experiences as those who are not.
This year marks the third season of "I Am You," which has been presented during alternating years since 2008. March is Disabilities Month, and the show certainly represents the message that the annual observance advances.
This year's campaign carries the theme "Celebrate Community" and is co-sponsored by Duke Energy.
It depicts a typical community, where a cross-section of people with and without disabilities, representing various ages and ethnic backgrounds, are gathered.
The LARC Center is operated by Stone Belt, which has similar facilities in Bloomington and Columbus.
"I Am You" features monologues by the nine cast members, whose presentations focus on such Stone Belt principles as "Self-determination is essential" and "Social life and relationships help create quality of life."
"I Am You" will help immeasurably in helping others "see people as people."
Performances will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at 107 West Ninth Street in Bloomington. Admission to Saturday's performance will cost $20, which includes a talk-back session and a reception after the performance; admission to Sunday's performance is $15.
