(SEYMOUR) - A former candidate for Seymour mayor was arrested this week on eight federal charges of bank fraud.

Robert J. Holley, special agent in charge of the Indianapolis office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, confirmed this morning that Todd A. Van Natta, 35, of Columbus was arrested Tuesday.

FBI agents arrested Van Natta without incident at his home at Grandview Lake in the Columbus area at around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Holley says, Van Natta was booked into a Marion County Sheriff's Department jail, and on Thursday, Van Natta was detained in custody by U.S. Magistrate Judge Kennard P. Foster of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana.

Van Natta, a former Seymour resident, has been charged with eight counts of bank fraud, the result of a 20-month joint investigation by the FBI, Internal Revenue Service, Columbus Police Department and Seymour Police Department.

Van Natta sought the Democratic Party's nomination for Seymour mayor in 2007 but lost in the primary election that spring.

He has operated a number of rental properties in Seymour, several of which have been foreclosed upon in recent years.

The FBI, Seymour and Columbus police served a warrant at the home of Van Natta's father in the 8500 block of Beacon Hill Drive, south of Seymour in late May 2011.

Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes confirmed then that a federal investigation was under way, but authorities have never commented further until Friday's confirmation that Van Natta had been arrested.

Hayes confirm that multiple warrants were executed last May but would not reveal where they were served.
