(BLOOMFIELD) - Area grain farmers can receive a preview on prospects for upcoming markets at a special webinar.
Nick Schneider, of the Greene County Daily World reports the office of Purdue Extension Greene County, located at the fairgrounds, will host a free Prospective Planting webinar from noon to 1:30 p.m. on March 30.
Purdue University agriculture economists Chris Hurt and Corinne Alexander will help area farmers and agribusinesses make sense of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Prospective Planting and Grain Stocks Report that will be issued on the morning of March 30.
"The report is the first to indicate what U.S. farmers intend to plant and has the potential to have a major impact on new crop prices as national corn stocks continue to be extremely tight," Alexander, who serves associate professor in the Purdue Department of Agriculture Economics, said. "This webinar will offer analysis and market strategies for producers heading into the 2012 crop season."
Professor Hurt, the editor of the Purdue Agricultural Economics Report, specializes in examination of family farm market problems, pricing strategies, and livestock futures market problems, pricing strategies, and livestock futures market performance.
In extension education, Hurt provides analysis for participation in government programs, teaches marketing principles and alternatives, evaluates the livestock industry structure, and provides price analysis and outlook of live cattle and live hogs.
Hurt helps coordinate a fee-based market newsletter and report service published jointly with the University of Illinois.
Associate professor Alexander serves as an Extension specialist in the area of grain marketing. She assists farmers and agricultural businesses with the marketing of their grain both in commodity markets and in specialty markets.
Her research generally focuses on interactions between members of the supply chain, with a particular interest in contractual relationships.
She offers Extension programs that focus on price risk management and provides information about new marketing tools such as new generation grain marketing contracts, marketing value-added products, with a focus on food-grade grains and organic products.
The webinar will be offered concurrently at Purdue Extension offices in Adams, Bartholomew, Carroll, Hendricks, Huntington, LaPorte, Madison, Pike, Spencer, Vigo, Warrick, Vermillion, and Blackford counties.
