Dugger Couple Say Mine Made Their House Shift

Last updated on Monday, March 26, 2012

(DUGGER) - Diane and Corky Todd live just outside of Dugger.

They also live just across the street from Bear Run Mine, and they say that's caused them some problems.

"The house shifts back and forth, and we have one cabinet that when it shifted, it knocked the big chunk out of the wall," Diane Todd said.

All of their neighbors have gotten a settlement, money to help them deal with the damage, but the Todds said the only settlement they've gotten, came 15 years ago, under a different company, before the current damage.

"Now, they're coming back and saying that because they settled 15 years ago, they don't have to do it now," Diane Todd said.

We reached out to Peabody energy, in a statement they said quote: "We are working with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to investigate this complaint, which involves a property that is located more than a mile from active mining. The Bear Run Mine is proud of our reputation for good neighbor practices, including working with adjacent property owners to address concerns that can be substantiated."
