American Red Cross Blood Drive At White River Valley

Last updated on Friday, March 9, 2012

(SWITZ CITY) - In an effort to reach out and help to replenish the American Red Cross’ critically low blood supplies following last Friday’s barrage of tornadoes in southeastern Indiana, members of the White River Valley Junior-Senior High School National Honor Society will host a community blood drive March 13. The blood drive in the school cafeteria will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WRV National Honor Society sponsor Rebecca Harris says she was notified by the Red Cross that several planned blood drives at other locations - including Henryville High School, which was destroyed by the EF-4 level tornado - had be canceled by storm damage.

This and multiple injuries from the storm compounded the need for more blood units, according to Harris.

"Their (the Red Cross) blood supply is just really low right now. So they would like for us to get the best drive possible," Harris said. "We'd like to get the word out and tell the community that our doors are open."

National Honor Society President Alyssa Flynn, a senior, said the NHS recognizes students who exhibit four principals - character, service, scholarship, and leadership.
Flynn said the blood drive falls in line with the service values stressed by NHS.

Each NHS student is required to annually do 10 hours of service work as well as maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

The WRV drive has a goal to receive at least 120 units of blood.

"This is the first year that WRV has opened its blood drive to the community so we are really hoping to get a lot of the community members to come in, that way we have a better chance to reach 120-plus people," she said.

The WRV National Honor Society has 38 members composed of 12th, 11th and second semester 10th graders.
