(BEDFORD) - 14-year-old Kody Butcher, a Bedford Middle School student, will travel with a delegation of students to England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales as a part of the People to People Ambassador Program this summer.

After passing through a rigorous interview and nomination process, Butcher has his passport in hand and is counting down the days until he leaves Indianapolis for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The program was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, acting on his belief that "direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world can promote cultural understanding and world peace."

While abroad for the 19-day trip, Butcher will visit the British Parliament in England, rappel down a castle wall, do a biological study of Loch Ness in Scotland and spend two days living with an average British family, among other things. Included in the cultural exchange program are community service projects.

The first Butcher will complete will be raising money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Bartholomew County.

The second will be completed during the overseas trip.

But before taking the trip, the family must come up with the $7,000 it will cost. That price tag includes room and board, fees, travel and food. They are looking for community support.

Kody will do yard work or other task to raise the money. The family has set up an account at Jackson County Bank in Kody's name for those who'd like to make a contribution. Anything left over after the goal is reached will be donated to a local charity of the teen's choice.
