(WASHINGTON) - A taser once again came in handy for the Washington Police Department when they had to subdue a defiant male subject Sunday.
WPD dispatchers received a call at 9:22 p.m. from a Daviess County Sheriff's Department dispatcher who was on the phone with a female reporting a man with a gun was at the door of her residence, Lot 24 Sundale Trailer Court, then left, walking toward the highway.
According to WPD Sgt. Greg Dietsch, the man was upset that the woman's children played in his yard.
At 9:35 p.m., officers found the man, identified as Jack K. Anderson, in a trailer at Lot 20, where he was barricaded inside with a handgun.
He refused to comply with officers, Dietsch said, but did not make any direct threats to harm them or himself. A short time later Anderson opened the door of the mobile home, and the officers were able to take him into custody.
"(The open door) provided an opportunity to use the taser instead of having to use deadly force," Dietsch said. "The taser saved his life and that of everybody there. It incapacitated him so he was unable to retrieve his gun."
Anderson was transported to Daviess Community Hospital by Southwest Medical then taken into emergency detention for mental evaluation. Anderson will charged with resisting law enforcement and intimidation with a deadly weapon.
