(MITCHELL) - Lights to properly illuminate two of Mitchell’s city-owned flag poles, one at the cemetery and the other in front of the city pool, were discussed during Tuesday’s regular board of works meeting in Mitchell.
According to flag etiquette rules, "It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open.
However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. Rules go on to state, the flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed."
The issue was brought to the city's attention by Ron Pridemore nearly two years ago. However, there is no electricity to provide lighting at either location. A solar light was added at the cemetery, but has since stopped working.
The cost to trench for cables and bring electricity to both locations would be $2,500, a discounted estimate submitted by a local contractor. However, board member Terry Slone questioned the expense say the bid was low, but it didn't seem like a wise way to spend money. He suggested putting the flag up in the morning and take it down at dark, costing the city nothing.
Mayor Gary Pruett suggested the board table the issue for more information, and until something is decided, the flags would be raised and lowered every day.
