(BEDFORD) - At a planning meeting held at the Bedford Chamber of Commerce residents voiced opinions on blueprints for revitalizing the city's hub.

Opinions for constructing walking trails and enhancing the downtown by incorporating local art talents dominated the second session.

The planning process focuses on five designated area: Downtown Core, Depot District 1, the J Street Corridor, East Downtown and West Downtown.

The planning process will be completed by May and is being facilitated by David Goffinet of Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates.

The goal is to generate a better business climate for Bedford, the area surrounding the courthouse. About 50 people attended the meeting

Other suggestions included adding new restaurants and offering incentives to those willing to move business to the square. During discussion of public space, the old Milwaukee Depot was mentioned, along with increasing the number of activities held on the square, renovation of the courthouse, and incorporating public art into the plan.

With the input the city plans to seek a Stellar Community Grant. The grant is given to communities who develop a multi-agency partnership and is designed to fund comprehensive community development projects in the state's smaller communities. Bedford was a finalist last year, when North Vernon and Greencastle reaped an estimated $31 million in state funding.
