(SPRINGVILLE) - Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says police are not sure why Judith "Jude" Gater shot her husband and then herself.

Craig says after an investigation into the deaths, police determined Jude shot her husband Aaron Gater with a .45-caliber handgun and then shot herself at their trailer on Poplar Ridge Road.

Craig says Gater suffered a close-contact wound, according to an autopsy report, implying Jude shot Aaron and then herself.

The couple was found dead inside their mobile home by Jude's daughter Thursday afternoon.

Police have not been able to determine exactly what happened before the shooting. Craig did add that items in the home were knocked over but not like other domestic fights police have investigated.

The couple has a history of domestic violence and Aaron Gater has a criminal history related to those fights.
